The Can Kicks Back’s mission is “to educate, organize and mobilize young Americans in order to promote a sustainable, generationally balanced federal budget.” Formed in 2012 by five millennials looking to get more of their generation engaged in fiscal issues, TCKB works to inform young Americans who stand to lose the most with the growing generational imbalance of the federal budget.
Veracity Media teamed up with The Can Kicks Back to build a new website with elegance and impact -- something that matches their enthusiasm and passion. Using NationBuilder as the base platform, we built a mobile-responsive website with a modern, engaging design that displays pertinent information clearly.
Making the debt sexy is no easy task, which is why we worked closely with the TCKB team to create catchy designs that make the consequences of an unsustainable fiscal path relatable to Millenials. For folks who can argue CBO vs. OMB baseline projections, these young people have an eye for modern images that articulate financial information more approachably that does a spreadsheet in grayscale. With the new designs, their web presence uses visual content to simplify complex ideas and make them relatable.
Veracity is proud to worked with TCKB on such an important cause. In addition to website development, we worked with them to reframe messages so they are easier to understand to stakeholders with less technical backgrounds. The Can Kicks Back can now discuss innovation, infrastructure, economic growth, and taxes easily with anyone who is interested. The economic concerns Millennials and Gen Z coming up behind them are important, and through our work, we hope to gain the eyes and ears of the American public.

Part of the summer involves taking some time to relax, enjoying the weather that our friends in Southern California get to experience year round, and taking a larger look back on everything at a midpoint in the year. But this summer has been our busiest without exception!
Not only did we create websites for Zephyr Teachout for Governor of New York, the Malala Fund, CCSA, and TellThemSC, but we've been traveling. Here's a short recap of some our latest trips.
Detroit: Redeeming America's Promise, New Leaders Council - Detroit Chapter & Michigan Suburbs Alliance.
Veracity partners Alex Torpey and Aaron Straus Garcia flew out to Detroit to participate in a brainstorming, ideation and strategy session with the Redeeming America's Promise Team. You can read more about the session in a blog post by Morley Winograd, President of RAP, talking about the team's vision, and the steps needed to get there, to help make college an affordable opportunity for millions of Americans who either can't afford it, or get buried in student debt when they receive their diploma.
While Veracity is working with the New Leaders Council, a national organization, to help empower their local chapters and to move their mission of training young leaders, Aaron and Alex met with the up and coming Detroit Chapter, one of the newer local chapters of NLC. Detroit has a turbulent and complicated but newly invigorated political scene, and as more young people call this city their home. It has the highest number of millennials moving in out of any city in the United States, and the opportunity for cultivating the next generation of leaders only continues to grow.
Next, they took a trip out to the suburb of Ferndale to visit with the Michigan Suburbs Alliance. Michigan Suburbs Alliance is a 501(c)3 organization which was founded in 2002 by Conan Smith to address the shared challenges of metro Detroit’s inner ring suburbs. The organization has grown to represent, engage and partner with officials and representatives from more than 31 communities representing more than a million residents, to help find innovative ways to sustainably and collaboratively plan for their communities' future.
Sacramento: New Leaders Council National Conference
Veracity’s digital strategist, Naomi Rothwell, flew out to sunny Sacramento to participate in the sixth annual New Leaders Council (NLC) Retreat. NLC is a 501(c)3 that works to recruit, train and promote the progressive political entrepreneurs of tomorrow. For two days, NLC leadership, alumni and fellows gathered to plan the future of NLC and the progressive movement.
Naomi, also an NLC alum, spoke on a panel about how to build your NLC Communications plan -- from building a bright, topical website to using the most compelling social media strategy. She also trained NLC’s chapter leaders from several of the cities whose sites will launch this year. (In a bold strategic move to empower local chapters, NLC will be launching new microsites for each of its 30+ chapters.) Naomi was joined by Peter Allen of NLC Silicon Valley and Kirstin Hunziker of NLC San Francisco. Other speakers throughout the weekend included former Virginia Senator Jim Webb, Simon Rosenberg, President of NDN, and Lesley Chilcott, Producer of An Inconvenient Truth.
Each year, NLC recruits Fellows from outside traditional power structures and equips them with the skills necessary to be civic leaders in their communities and workplaces. In 2015, NLC will be training over 700 young leaders in 40 different cities. Veracity couldn’t be prouder to help in this effort to lead the progressive movement into the future.
New York City. Democracy for New York City
On the way home from Sacramento, Naomi stopped off in the big Apple to celebrate an incredible organization: Democracy for New York City, celebrating its tenth anniversary after growing out of Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential bid. At DFNYC, Naomi met with the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Zephyr Teachout, and her running mate, Tim Wu. Veracity Media worked with the Teachout campaign to launch their site on Veracity’s Crisp theme - giving them a clean, mobile-responsive web presence quickly. Teachout has since made headlines by running an aggressively progressive campaign against sitting Governor Andrew Cuomo. We’ll be watching the September 9th primary closely!
Sandra Fluke was thrust into the national spotlight when she testified before members of Congress regarding the Affordable Care Act's contraception policy and was subsequently verbally attacked by Rush Limbaugh and conservative commentators. She was instrumental in President Obama’s reelection campaign in 2012, and when she announced her run for State Senate in California’s 26th District, she knew that channeling her national platform into her race would require a comprehensive suite of digital strategy that only Veracity Media could provide.
Through successful social media growth, digital fundraising campaigns, and viral social advertising, Veracity Media was able to help boost Sandra into the top two on primary day, ensuring she will move on to the November 4th general election.
Veracity was able to not only create digital fundraising strategies, but also used Sandra’s online presence to provide tremendous support to the causes closest to her heart - from women’s access to reproductive health to early childhood education to environmental protection. We’re proud to have helped Sandra move her online supporters into active, on-the-ground volunteers and donors.
If you're interested in how Veracity can help your campaign, cause, organization or idea, we'd love to hear from you!
Veracity was privileged to work with the amazing Malala Yousafzai, the brave student and education activist who spoke out for the rights of women and girls in the Swat region of Pakistan. After she rose to prominence, on October 9th, 2012, the Taliban stormed Malala’s school bus and shot her in the head in an attempt to silence her voice. Her shooting, and her refusal to stand down from what she believed was right, brought light to the plight of millions of children around the world who are denied an education today.
For Malala’s birthday on July 14th, the Malala Fund brought in Veracity to create a two phase website to celebrate “Malala Day.” The first, a splash page designed to capture attention and emails, quickly rolled out as Veracity worked closely to capture the bright, vibrant spirit of Malala in a mobile-responsive site that could easily be shared on social media. Next, Veracity designed a full site with features such as a dynamic Twitter stream designed to capture supporters as they live tweeted, helping to create a virtual community supporting and celebrating Malala, and people like her around the world who bravely stand up for what they believe in.
Malala continues to raise her voice to say, in her words, “We are stronger than the enemies of education. We are stronger than fear, hatred, violence and poverty.” We’re deeply honored to help her raise her voice, and ask that you visit her site and learn more about the Malala fund.

One of the biggest hurdles any organization faces when they make the switch from another website platform to NationBuilder (or any website platform to any new platform) is how to keep or transfer the content they’ve spent years building.
A popular blog or large organization can have thousands of posts and pages, from daily blog entries to news to press releases to events. Transferring those pages can be overwhelming, can take hundreds of hours of work, and sometimes even stops people from the upgrades that they know they need, either because of staff time required or cost or both.
Luckily, here at Veracity, we’ve built a NationBuilder website importer that makes this difficult process quick and inexpensive. We can take your whole site - built on WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, MODx or other platforms - and move it directly into NationBuilder, maintaining post and page content, authors, images, tags, published dates, etc. It’s 2014 - there’s no need to spend valuable staff time copying and pasting.
Dozens of organizations have used the importer successfully so far. If you’re interested in this for you or your organization, campaign, blog or company, get in touch with us today. We’ll analyze your database setup and get you a quote right away.
Recently, Veracity Media had the pleasure of creating the website for Hillary Clinton’s new, highly anticipated book, Hard Choices.
The clean, dynamic website, built on the NationBuilder platform, allows Simon & Schuster, the publisher of the book, to use the cutting-edge organizing database to engage with readers, provide early previews of the book, and distribute updates about author appearances. Veracity built this mobile-responsive site to make it easy for visitors to find more information, share their support of the book, and includes a unique YouTube video playlist page.

Last night, the Veracity Media team gathered together at the office to watch primary election results pour in from across the country. With candidates in primary elections in three states, what ended up occurring on election night was an affirmation of the sheer power that an organized digital campaign can have in drawing in voters, volunteers, and donations.
Digital is often seen as a micro-component to campaigns, when in fact our experience has led us to believe that it’s more of a meta-component – influencing every aspect of the campaign from messaging, field, fundraising, events and more. Although there are always nearly limitless factors influencing any particular race, there is no doubt how much of a difference truly comprehensive digital field makes.
Sandra Fluke, a nationally-known activist, lawyer, community leader and candidate for California State Senate, beat out six other candidates to advance to the November general election. With a cutting-edge and accessible website filled with dynamic and interesting content, a robust digital engagement strategy spanning from social media to field, our team was able to help channel her existing name recognition, experience and ideas to help turn out new volunteers, donations, and most importantly: votes. Despite being outspent 2 to 1, her campaign won an extremely tight race, beating out her opponent by less than two points. Sandra knocked on a lot of doors, as did her volunteers, but when your race is down to a few points, your digital game can put you over the top.
Using popular but often overlooked platforms like DailyKos - where Sandra quickly became viral and one of the top shared first posts on the site’s history - she gained momentum through leveraging petitions, online town halls, and creative calls to action.
Digital campaigning also made waves at the national level, where Ro Khanna--a long-time Veracity client --advanced to the general election. Unlike Sandra, who started with national name-recognition, Ro faced an uphill battle against a long-standing incumbent with far greater name recognition. In addition to a tremendous ground game and volunteer army, his digital efforts, encompassing social media, advertising, mass messaging and an interactive website, greatly contributed to raising his profile, from almost zero to nearly 27% by primary day, allowing him to handily advance into the elections on November 4th.
We at Veracity Media are also honored and proud to have worked with candidates and champions who, in spite of their momentous dedication and hard work, did not advance to the general election.
The Veracity team was in Los Angeles last week to set up the launch of the Redeeming America’s Promise website, attend the Young Elected Officials Conference (Veracity partner Alex Torpey is a mayor, and leading voice in a growing movement of young people seeking and holding elected office) and to spend time working with NationBuilder. We met young leaders from across the country who were convened to share policy ideas, discuss challenges and network.
At the culmination of the event, NationBuilder hosted the first annual “Iron NationBuilder Competition.” Modeled after the popular cooking competition “Iron Chef”, Adriel Hampton, VP of Business Development at NationBuilder, took on Ryan Morgan, Veracity partner and all-around coding magician. The challenge: build a functional NationBuilder website in 40 minutes. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Under intense pressure, both competitors took their Nations from zero to sixty in just minutes, employing very different methodologies to build their new Nation. The contest was Chaired Mike Moschella, NationBuilder's VP of Organizing, Politics & Advocacy and contenders were judged on a 1-10 scale of 1) Design 2) Functionality and 3) organizing flair by a panel of young elected officials - Matt Haney, Commissioner on the San Francisco Board of Education; Ward 3 Bay Area Rapid Transit representative Rebecca Saltzman and Nate Shinagawa, a County Legislator in Tompkins County, New York.
After the dust and HTML code settled, and the judges had doled out their scores, Ryan Morgan emerged victorious, earning the title of “Iron NationBuilder,” and planting Veracity’s flag as first firm to achieve this distinction.
Dozens of young elected officials and other spectators were in attendance, and participated in not only learning about how the NationBuilder platform works, but the value of what we do at Veracity: providing beautiful website design, digital strategy, online fundraising, and offering a deep understanding and experience having worked so heavily in the campaign and advocacy world. Not only do we touch on all of these areas, but we do so in a socially impactful way that integrates fully with the organizing tools built into NationBuilder, empowering website visitors and administrators to fully realize the power of this cutting-edge and affordable organizing platform to help move their ideas or cause forward.

Everyone has access to data, but having better access to organized data is what allows our clients to make the best use of their resources and time to help move their goals forward.
The U.K. Labour Party, one of the oldest and most reputable political parties in the world is already a digital leader, no stranger to cutting edge organizing tools and technology. For example, the party has set up NationBuilder subnations for each of the parliamentary seats for the upcoming election, giving each district a customized and unique website. But not all of the party’s supporters know about every site, or the volunteer opportunities that each site offers.
To help engage their supporters in the most efficient way possible, Labour brought in Veracity to create a custom, bespoke app that aggregates event data across the hundreds of their subnations. Using our proprietary library that accesses NationBuilder’s API, we aggregated data from the subnations connected to the Party’s main NationBuilder account, and built an elegant interface that makes finding events easy for website visitors.
Users simply head to http://events.labour.org.uk, and put in their post (zip) code. Once they hit search, they’re shown a listing of events across the country, sorted both by their distance from the event, and by event importance. They can easily click through to the event on the subnation, and engage at a more local level. All the data transmitted to the subnations for every event, is of course aggregated back up to the main database automatically.
Veracity was the first firm to touch NationBuilder’s API endpoints, and with tools like our custom event aggregator, we continue to be on the leading edge of innovating NationBuilder. From other tools like our tried and true Wordpress blog importer, which has been used to build over two dozen unique NationBuilder sites itself, a beautiful mapping tool that works on pages like petitions and endorsements, and a voter file analysis tool, Veracity Media offers a comprehensive suite of applications to help you fully leverage of NationBuilder’s database.

Sandra Fluke has lived and worked in California for years, building coalitions, advocating for legislation, and securing the passage of bills that will change lives for the better. Now, Sandra wants to bring a fresh perspective and a new generation of leadership to the California State Senate. Learn more about Sandra’s campaign.
As the Supreme Court argued the Hobby Lobby case on March 25th, Veracity Media worked with Sandra’s campaign to develop a rapid-response social media plan to share her message. First, we built a petition page that clearly stated her positions. Over 1,000 people signed it in the first 24 hours, and her accompanying social media posts had hundreds of shares. Sandra’s tweets and images were also in Twitter’s top twenty posts for the hashtag #HobbyLobby, a trending topic that day.
Keeping your message in the forefront of the conversation isn’t easy, especially in the rapidly changing world of social media. Translating support from online engagement into petition signatures is even harder. Veracity can help you move your campaign’s supporters from social media support to more active participants in your campaign.
With innovative online social media strategies, expertise in voter outreach and targeting, and the best web developers in the field, Veracity Media is a different sort of consultant. Communication between all digital parts of a campaign is crucial in converting a Facebook Like into a needed vote, and Veracity Media provides a service unlike any other. We can help your campaign create successful engagement like Sandra’s petition.
