Part of the summer involves taking some time to relax, enjoying the weather that our friends in Southern California get to experience year round, and taking a larger look back on everything at a midpoint in the year. But this summer has been our busiest without exception!
Not only did we create websites for Zephyr Teachout for Governor of New York, the Malala Fund, CCSA, and TellThemSC, but we've been traveling. Here's a short recap of some our latest trips.
Detroit: Redeeming America's Promise, New Leaders Council - Detroit Chapter & Michigan Suburbs Alliance.
Veracity partners Alex Torpey and Aaron Straus Garcia flew out to Detroit to participate in a brainstorming, ideation and strategy session with the Redeeming America's Promise Team. You can read more about the session in a blog post by Morley Winograd, President of RAP, talking about the team's vision, and the steps needed to get there, to help make college an affordable opportunity for millions of Americans who either can't afford it, or get buried in student debt when they receive their diploma.
While Veracity is working with the New Leaders Council, a national organization, to help empower their local chapters and to move their mission of training young leaders, Aaron and Alex met with the up and coming Detroit Chapter, one of the newer local chapters of NLC. Detroit has a turbulent and complicated but newly invigorated political scene, and as more young people call this city their home. It has the highest number of millennials moving in out of any city in the United States, and the opportunity for cultivating the next generation of leaders only continues to grow.
Next, they took a trip out to the suburb of Ferndale to visit with the Michigan Suburbs Alliance. Michigan Suburbs Alliance is a 501(c)3 organization which was founded in 2002 by Conan Smith to address the shared challenges of metro Detroit’s inner ring suburbs. The organization has grown to represent, engage and partner with officials and representatives from more than 31 communities representing more than a million residents, to help find innovative ways to sustainably and collaboratively plan for their communities' future.
Sacramento: New Leaders Council National Conference
Veracity’s digital strategist, Naomi Rothwell, flew out to sunny Sacramento to participate in the sixth annual New Leaders Council (NLC) Retreat. NLC is a 501(c)3 that works to recruit, train and promote the progressive political entrepreneurs of tomorrow. For two days, NLC leadership, alumni and fellows gathered to plan the future of NLC and the progressive movement.
Naomi, also an NLC alum, spoke on a panel about how to build your NLC Communications plan -- from building a bright, topical website to using the most compelling social media strategy. She also trained NLC’s chapter leaders from several of the cities whose sites will launch this year. (In a bold strategic move to empower local chapters, NLC will be launching new microsites for each of its 30+ chapters.) Naomi was joined by Peter Allen of NLC Silicon Valley and Kirstin Hunziker of NLC San Francisco. Other speakers throughout the weekend included former Virginia Senator Jim Webb, Simon Rosenberg, President of NDN, and Lesley Chilcott, Producer of An Inconvenient Truth.
Each year, NLC recruits Fellows from outside traditional power structures and equips them with the skills necessary to be civic leaders in their communities and workplaces. In 2015, NLC will be training over 700 young leaders in 40 different cities. Veracity couldn’t be prouder to help in this effort to lead the progressive movement into the future.
New York City. Democracy for New York City
On the way home from Sacramento, Naomi stopped off in the big Apple to celebrate an incredible organization: Democracy for New York City, celebrating its tenth anniversary after growing out of Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential bid. At DFNYC, Naomi met with the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Zephyr Teachout, and her running mate, Tim Wu. Veracity Media worked with the Teachout campaign to launch their site on Veracity’s Crisp theme - giving them a clean, mobile-responsive web presence quickly. Teachout has since made headlines by running an aggressively progressive campaign against sitting Governor Andrew Cuomo. We’ll be watching the September 9th primary closely!
